Hindu Medieval, Kalachuris of Ratnapur, Jagapala Deva (1100-1150 AD), Silver Pana, 0.24 gms, 9.15 mm,
Obverse: Highly stylized Goddess Lakshmi seated facing,
Reverse: Two-line Devanagari legend: ‘Sri Jaga/ Pala’
Kalachuri of Ratanpura had ruled the central part of India from the 11th Century to the 12th Century. Today, it is situated in present-day Chhattisgarh from their capital at Ratnapura (modern Ratanpur in Bilaspur district).
Jagapala was a feudatory of the Kalachuri kings who is known from an inscription. His coins are clearly based on the coins of Gangeya Deva, particularly the silver ones such as this one: Gangeya Deva silver coin.
The coins were unpublished until Cribb published some in 2003.
