Forced token currency : Muḥammad bin Tughluq’s notable experiment with copper / brass token coinage began in AH 730 and lasted until some time in AH 732. The basic unit was the tanka of 80 ratī weighing around 9 g. This tanka appears to have comprised 48 gānī in most places and 50 in Daulatābād. There were half and quarter tankas, and various gānī issues, none of which bore a direct weight relationship with the tankas. A series of legal dirhams (dirham al-shar‘ī) was also issued. Most of the coins types were issued either from Dehlī or Daulatābād, but there were also tanka issues from various other mints.
